Bangladesh and European Union Bilateral Summit Agrees to Combat Human Trafficking and Expand Skilled Labor Access

In a high-level bilateral summit hosted at the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment in Dhaka on Monday (October 12, 2026), Bangladesh and the European Union pledged enhanced cooperation to eliminate irregular migration, curb human trafficking, and open structured pathways for skilled Bangladeshi professionals entering the European labor market.

The Bangladeshi delegation was led by Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, alongside State Minister Md. Nurul Huq, while the EU delegation was headed by EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury emphasized that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's directive, the government has enforced stringent measures to bring discipline to overseas recruitment, including the cancellation of licenses belonging to 52 irregular recruiting agencies.

Secretary Md. Mokhtar Ahmed sought comprehensive EU support under the 'Bangladesh-EU Talent Partnership' for skill certification, European language training, digital recruitment, and returning worker rehabilitation under the 'National Reintegration Policy 2025' across ICT, construction, textiles, shipbuilding, agriculture, and hospitality sectors. In response, EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner affirmed full European assistance, noting that over 500,000 Bangladeshis currently reside legally across EU member states. Highlighting political stability in Bangladesh, Brunner stated that asylum claims have dropped significantly, allowing the EU to officially categorize Bangladesh as a "Safe Country."
