President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated on Monday (October 19, 2026) that the media serves as a vital pillar of the democratic system, delivering the greatest benefits to the public when it acts to advance democracy.

Speaking during a courtesy call at Bangabhaban by an executive committee delegation from the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU)—led by President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel, alongside Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam—the President urged media workers and organizations to unite to protect professional interests. He called for a robust role from professional bodies in tackling key challenges, such as the illegal dismissal of media workers, wage board implementation, and justice for violence against journalists.

The DRU delegation briefed the President on their welfare activities and formally invited him as the chief guest for their upcoming 'Best Reporting Award' ceremony. President Fakhrul praised journalists for their courageous role, recalled past events with the DRU, and assured the delegation of his support alongside an expression of optimism about attending the awards program. The meeting was also attended by the President’s Military Secretary, Press Secretary, and other senior officials.
