Modern Technology and Research More Crucial Than Money for Jute Sector Growth: Commerce, Industry & Textiles Minister Khondokar Abdul Muktadir
Commerce, Industry, and Textiles & Jute Minister Khondokar Abdul Muktadir during the MoU signing between JDPC and Jiangnan University in Dhaka.

Advancing Bangladesh’s jute sector requires advanced technology and research cooperation far more than mere capital investment, declared Minister for Commerce, Industry, and Textiles & Jute Khondokar Abdul Muktadir on Sunday (October 18, 2026). Speaking at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the Jute Diversification Promotion Center (JDPC) and China’s Jiangnan University at the Ministry of Commerce in Dhaka, the Minister noted that Bangladesh possesses sufficient internal investment capability but needs China's technological expertise in high-yield seed production, fiber quality improvement, and high-value product diversification.

The MoU was signed by Ministry of Textiles & Jute Joint Secretary Md. Jahid Hossain on behalf of Bangladesh, and Dean of the School of Textile Engineering at Jiangnan University, Professor Ma Pibo, on behalf of China, in the presence of State Minister for Textiles & Jute Md. Shariful Alam. Minister Muktadir stressed that the government aims to shift away from exporting raw jute or basic yarn towards exporting competitive, high-value value-added products in international markets. To support this vision, Bangladesh will directly connect the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) and JDPC with Jiangnan University’s advanced research facilities.

State Minister Md. Shariful Alam highlighted that transferring research-backed technology to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is vital for improving product design, quality control, and global competitiveness. The Chinese delegation also expressed strong interest in establishing joint laboratories and building integrated research platforms with top academic institutions including Dhaka University and Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) to innovate alternative jute fibers and modern textile goods.
