Former Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF), Air Chief Marshal (retd) Sheikh Abdul Hannan, has been arrested by Qatari police in Doha in connection with high-profile corruption and money laundering cases filed against him in Bangladesh. The arrest took place on October 15, 2026, and was officially communicated to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) via an Interpol notification.
ACC Deputy Director Md. Aktarul Islam confirmed the development on Sunday (October 18, 2026). The ACC has filed two separate cases against Sheikh Abdul Hannan and his wife, Tahmida Begum, alleging the acquisition of vast wealth beyond known sources of income, money laundering, and suspicious multi-million-taka banking transactions. According to ACC case files, Hannan acquired illegal assets worth BDT 3,28,51,506, while six bank accounts under his name recorded suspicious transactions totaling BDT 27,63,66,701. His wife, Tahmida Begum, faces primary charges for possessing BDT 1,91,90,304 in illegal wealth and operating 32 bank accounts with BDT 1.18 crore in suspicious transactions.
Investigations conducted in July 2025 also exposed offshore businesses and real estate investments registered under the couple's and children's names in Canada, Dubai, and Qatar. Court orders previously enforced travel bans, froze 38 bank accounts, and attached luxury flats and land parcels across Dhaka. Commissioned into the Air Force in 1984, Hannan served as Bangladesh's 16th Chief of Air Staff from June 12, 2021, until his retirement on June 11, 2024.
