Minister for Road Transport & Bridges, Railways, and Shipping Sheikh Robiul Alam emphasized on Sunday (October 18, 2026) that infrastructural upgrades to the National Press Club must strictly preserve its historical identity, heritage, and unique character.
Speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the sports competition organized for the National Press Club's 72nd founding anniversary, Minister Alam commended the media, calling journalists the "conscience of the nation and the mirror of society." He highlighted that journalists play a crucial role in steering government, democracy, and national politics in the right direction by fearlessly identifying injustice.
He noted that development does not merely mean constructing modern concrete structures, but rather safeguarding the monumental historical role and legacy of national institutions.
Addressing the long-standing demand to rename the adjacent Metro Rail Station after the National Press Club, the Minister expressed his agreement in principle. However, he explained that technical feasibility, software reconfiguration, and budgetary allocations need thorough review before implementation, promising to discuss the matter with the Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) to take required steps. Highlighting the symbolic importance of the anniversary marathon, he noted that perseverance, goal-oriented dedication, and discipline in sports reflect the core values needed to overcome national adversity. The event was attended by National Press Club President Poet Hasan Hafiz, eminent journalists, and club members, concluding with the distribution of prizes to competition winners.
