The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is actively investigating whether any legal boundaries were violated during State Minister for Liberation War Affairs and Dhaka-6 Member of Parliament Ishraque Hossain's open display of a firearm during an anti-drug operation.
Addressing journalists at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday (October 18, 2026), Additional Police Commissioner and Detective Branch (DB) Chief Md. Shafiqul Islam stated that police are reviewing the incident. "We are investigating the matter of State Minister Ishraque Hossain displaying a weapon during the anti-drug drive. If evidence of any irregularity or legal violation is found during the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved," he asserted. The DB chief made the remarks while responding to media queries during a press briefing regarding the arrest of a six-member motorcycle theft syndicate.
The controversy erupted following an incident on Friday (October 16, 2026) when Minister Ishraque partook in an anti-drug raid near the Gandaria railway station area in Dhaka-6. A video showing the Minister holding a firearm, shouting "Catch them, catch them!", circulated widely on social media and was briefly shared on his verified Facebook page before being deleted. Defending his actions, Ishraque claimed that the firearm is legally licensed, that he did not threaten or shoot anyone, and that he was forced to step in because local police failed to take action against persistent drug dens reported by constituents.
