No Hawkers Allowed on Gulistan-Sadarghat Road: DSCC Administrator Declares Zero-Tolerance Eviction Drive

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam has announced that street hawkers will strictly no longer be permitted to occupy the major arterial corridor stretching from Gulistan to Sadarghat. Speaking during a large-scale municipal eviction drive in the Fulbaria area on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Administrator emphasized that hawker operations must be confined exclusively to designated night markets and holiday markets.

The anti-encroachment drive commenced at 10:00 AM, utilizing heavy machinery including pay-loaders to demolish illegal temporary structures and shops occupying public footpaths. Four executive magistrates—Chief Estate Officer Md. Rezaul Karim, Chief Revenue Officer Jonaed Kabir Sohag, Executive Magistrate Hasiba Khan, and Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Aminul Islam—were on-site directing the operation. All confiscated materials and structural debris were loaded onto city corporation trucks and impounded.

Administrator Abdus Salam highlighted that municipal authorities had held prior consultations with hawker union leaders and issued multiple verbal and written notices. However, due to persistent re-occupation of footpaths, DSCC is instituting strict legal measures. Going forward, any unauthorized hawkers setting up stalls along the Gulistan-Sadarghat route will face immediate confiscation of merchandise and arrest. The city corporation will collaborate with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Traffic Division to maintain continuous monitoring and ensure unobstructed pedestrian movement.
