The Standing Committee on Public Undertakings of the 13th National Parliament has called for replacing short-term, repetitive river erosion spending with sustainable, long-term river management strategies utilizing modern technology and research-backed expertise.
The directive was issued during the committee’s 3rd meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), presided over by Committee Chairman and Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni. Reviewing ongoing operations, institutional challenges, and future roadmaps of the Ministry of Water Resources, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), and Water Resources Planning Organization (WARPO), the parliamentary panel emphasized holistic silt management, comprehensive evaluations of capital dredging, and unified canal re-excavation policies across all state agencies. To preserve groundwater, the committee recommended restricting deep tubewell installations in environmentally vulnerable zones while maximizing surface water usage and recycling. Additionally, the panel urged the immediate resolution of over 5,000 long-pending BWDB audit objections, timely project fund disbursements, institutional capacity building, and a permanent master plan to solve severe waterlogging and waste disposal issues in the Dhaka-Narayanganj-Demra (DND) area.
