The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has uncovered the mystery behind the murder of autorickshaw driver Md. Rahul (19) and the theft of his vehicle in Nawabganj, Dhaka, two and a half years after the incident occurred. Five individuals involved in the crime have been arrested.
Superintendent of Police M.N. Murshed, PPM, disclosed the details during a press conference held at the PBI Dhaka District Office on Thursday (October 8).
According to the PBI, Rahul left his home on the night of February 6, 2024, after dinner and went to sleep at a nearby workshop with his autorickshaw. The next day, he went missing along with his vehicle, and his phone was found switched off.
Two days later, on the morning of February 9, his semi-decomposed body was recovered from a bush near the workshop. Rahul's father, Md. Abdur Rahman, subsequently filed a murder case at Nawabganj Police Station, which was later transferred to the PBI for investigation.
Following the investigation, PBI first arrested Md. Samej, whose information led to the arrest of Md. Sabuj Miah. Sabuj provided a confession under Section 164 in court, leading to the apprehension of Khobir alias Gobinda, Md. Habib alias Sojol, and Md. Lalon Mollah, with Lalon also confessing in court.
PBI revealed that the perpetrators were acquainted with Rahul. Lalon was involved in the Yaba trade, from whom Rahul and others purchased drugs. Fearing that Rahul might leak information about his illegal drug business, Lalon plotted his murder.
On February 6, Sabuj lured Rahul to an open field in Nawabganj, where the group forced him to consume Yaba before brutally attacking him with an iron angle, rod, and battery, eventually strangling him to death.
They hid his body in Sojol's cattle farm for two days before dumping it near the workshop, subsequently selling the stolen autorickshaw and dividing the proceeds among themselves.
