Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought cooperation from Japan to diversify Bangladesh’s export portfolio, stating that deepening existing economic ties will unlock new horizons for bilateral trade and foreign direct investment (FDI).

The request was conveyed during an official bilateral meeting with Kataoka Susumu, President of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), held in Tokyo on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 11:45 AM local time, as reported by Deputy Press Secretary Shahadath Swadhin.

Praising JETRO’s pivotal role in facilitating Japanese business operations in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged Japanese conglomerates to invest heavily in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) targeting advanced manufacturing, information and communication technology (ICT), automobile production, renewable energy, and agro-processing.

Additionally, the Prime Minister advocated for Japanese collaboration in establishing skill development programs and Japanese language training centers in Bangladesh to prepare a skilled workforce for overseas employment opportunities in Japan. JETRO President Kataoka Susumu acknowledged Bangladesh's strong growth potential and strategic geographic location, affirming that economic reforms under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration have heightened interest among Japanese firms. Following the dialogue, PM Tarique Rahman attended a luncheon hosted by the JETRO President and extended an official invitation to Kataoka Susumu to visit Bangladesh.

The high-level Bangladesh delegation featured Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, Finance Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs-1 Humayun Kabir, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindyya Islam Amit, Invest Bangladesh Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostakur Rahman, and Special Assistant to PM Shakirul Islam Khan.
