Bangladesh Police Headquarters issued a detailed clarification on Monday night (October 26, 2026) regarding media reports and public controversy surrounding Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir's recent comments on "crossfire."
In a statement published on the official Bangladesh Police verified Facebook page, Police HQ stated that the IGP used the term "crossfire" literally and metaphorically to emphasize strict and unyielding enforcement of law against drug dealers, terrorists, and extortionists. The statement clarified that the IGP's comments were not intended to promote extrajudicial killings or endorse punishments outside the judicial framework.
To highlight the perilous conditions faced by law enforcement, Police HQ revealed that in the first ten months of 2026, police personnel faced 176 direct physical attacks while carrying out official duties, resulting in 4 police deaths and 370 severe injuries. The release cited statutory self-defense provisions under the Penal Code 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, and the Police Act 1861. Additionally, Police HQ addressed the IGP's remarks regarding journalists during the event at Chawkbazar, clarifying that his generalized comments were unintentional and inadvertent, reaffirming Bangladesh Police's steadfast commitment to human rights, neutrality, and the rule of law.
