Polling Underway in Thakurgaon-1 Parliamentary By-Election Following Presidential Vacancy
Voters casting their ballots under strict BGB and police supervision in Thakurgaon-1.

Voting for the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency by-election commenced uninterruptedly at 8:00 AM on Thursday, October 29, 2026, across 185 polling centers. Polling will continue through 4:00 PM without break to allow 516,140 registered voters across Thakurgaon Sadar, Ruhia, and Bhulli upazilas to elect their new parliamentary representative.

The seat fell vacant after incumbent Member of Parliament Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned from the Jatiya Sangsad upon being sworn in as the President of Bangladesh. A five-candidate contest is underway: Mirza Faysal Amin (BNP - Sheaf of Paddy), younger brother of the President; Mo. Delawar Hossain (Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami - Scale); Mo. Abdul Alim Nizami (Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan - Banyan Tree); Hafez Mo. Khademul Islam (Islami Andolan Bangladesh - Hand Fan); and Hussein Muhammad Omar Farooq (Bangladesh Congress - Green Coconut). Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud assured the public that exhaustive security arrangements have been enforced to guarantee a peaceful, transparent ballot.

Addressing concerns raised by Jamaat-e-Islami and the 11-party alliance regarding electoral integrity and level-playing fields, Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed revealed that a real-time Central Monitoring Cell at the EC headquarters in Dhaka is actively supervising the polls. The security grid combines Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Special Reserve Battalion (SRB), and police personnel utilizing high-resolution BGB surveillance drones and body-worn cameras for minute-by-minute coverage. A polling workforce of 3,152 election officials—comprising presiding, assistant presiding, and polling officers—has been deployed across 989 polling booths to manage voting operations.
