Electricity generation at the Barapukuria coal-fired thermal power plant in Dinajpur's Parbatipur has come to a complete standstill due to technical glitches that shut down both of its operational units.
Confirming the development on Tuesday afternoon (October 6, 2026), Chief Engineer Abu Bakkar Siddique stated that production from the 125 MW Unit-1 was halted on Monday morning, followed by the shutdown of the 275 MW Unit-3 on Tuesday morning, leading to frequent load-shedding across Parbatipur and the wider northern region.
While expressing hope that operations will resume shortly after repairs, the chief engineer noted that the plant's 2 MW Unit-2 has remained non-operational since November 2020 due to mechanical failures.
