The President has called for the development of internationally competent, skilled, and expert engineers within the country to meet the demands of the textile sector and reduce reliance on foreign experts.

He stated, “We must ensure suitable employment opportunities for our students, both at home and abroad. This will not only create a skilled workforce for the nation but also contribute to earning foreign currency.”

The President made these remarks when a seven-member delegation, led by Professor Dr. Md. Zulhas Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX), called on him at Bangabhaban.

According to a press release issued by the President’s Press Wing, Member of Parliament and BUTEX alumna, Engineer Sanjida Islam, was also present at the meeting.

The President urged for initiatives to increase domestic cotton production to meet the raw material requirements of the country’s textile industry.

He remarked, “Farmers must be encouraged, ways to reduce production costs must be identified, and coordination between the agricultural and textile sectors needs to be strengthened.”

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of research into extracting fibers from various natural sources—such as jute, pineapple leaves, and banana plants—as well as the development of synthetic yarns.

The delegation briefed the President on the role of BUTEX in the advancement of Bangladesh’s textile and ready-made garment (RMG) industry, as well as the university’s ongoing academic and research activities.

The delegation sought the President’s support on several matters, including infrastructure development, the establishment of modern laboratories, the recruitment of additional personnel, the creation of a separate BCS (Textile) cadre, an increase in the budget, and the allocation of land for a second campus in Purbachal, Dhaka. The President assured them of his full support.

The Vice-Chancellor invited the President—who also serves as the Chancellor of the university—to preside over the university’s second convocation, scheduled for next March.

The President accepted the invitation and confirmed his attendance at the event. Others present at the meeting included Professor Dr. Md. Ahsan Habib, Dean of the Faculty of Textile Management and Business Studies; Professor Shilpi Akter, Dean of the Faculty of Textile Engineering; Professor Dr. Hasina Akter, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering; Professor Dr. Rasheda Begum Dina, Dean of the Faculty of Textile Chemical Engineering; and Professor Dr. Lamia Zahir, Dean of the Faculty of Fashion Design and Apparel Engineering.

Additionally, the President’s Military Secretary, Secretary, and Press Secretary were also present at the meeting.
