President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for proactive preparation and meticulous urban planning to mitigate casualties and infrastructure damage caused by both natural and man-made disasters.
Speaking as the chief guest on Tuesday (October 13, 2026) at an event organized by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Dhaka to observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Head of State highlighted the grave risks facing urban centers. Drawing attention to Dhaka's dense and unplanned growth, the President expressed serious concern over its vulnerability to seismic activity, warning that a major earthquake could devastate the unorganized capital.
The President stressed that global precedents demonstrate how unplanned cities suffer significantly higher loss of life during calamities. He instructed relevant authorities to strictly enforce disaster-resilient building codes, protect natural river courses, and eliminate river pollution. The event was addressed by Special Guests including Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister M. Iqbal Hossain, and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, Munshi Rafiqul Alam.
