State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam has stressed that scientific research findings must not remain confined to laboratories, but must be actively converted into practical, commercially viable products and technologies to benefit the national economy.
He made these remarks on Thursday (October 8, 2026) during the official handover ceremony of the Sonali Bag project equipment and the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Latif Bawany Jute Mills in Demra, Dhaka. Under the agreement signed between the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC), the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust, and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), machinery and 53 inventory items valued at approximately BDT 20 crore were formally transferred to MBSTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Shahidul Islam. The State Minister explained that although the original Sonali Bag initiative achieved technical milestones in producing biodegradable bags from jute cellulose, high production costs prevented commercial viability before the project concluded in December 2024. Handing over the state-owned equipment to university researchers aims to advance multi-faceted jute cellulose research and eco-friendly product innovation. The event was attended by Tangail-2 MP Abdus Salam Pintu, Textiles and Jute Secretary Sharaf Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury, and BJMC Chairman Brigadier General Kabir Uddin Sikder.
