Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Arnab’ has slowed down significantly after striking the eastern coast of India, leading meteorologists in Bangladesh to downgrade earlier projections of heavy widespread rainfall across the country.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) meteorologist Md. Tariful Newaz Kabir confirmed that the cyclone began its landfall process early Wednesday, crossing the Indian coastline between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Upon making landfall, the system lost forward momentum and is currently moving slowly in a north-westerly direction.
Because the storm's velocity has decreased, the severe precipitation initially forecasted for Bangladesh's coastal belt and central regions is expected to be substantially lighter. However, peripheral cloud bands will still bring light to moderate rain or thundershowers across parts of Khulna, Rangpur, and Rajshahi divisions, with slight rainfall expected in Dhaka. Meanwhile, high moisture levels driven by low-pressure activity are creating muggy, humid weather across Bangladesh, following high temperatures recorded on Tuesday—where Dhaka reached 37.1°C. Across the border, Cyclone Arnab has caused heavy squally rains and rough seas along West Bengal’s coast, prompting local authorities at Digha sea beach in Purba Medinipur to issue safety warnings for tourists and residents.
