Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikrom has officially assumed the chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group (APG) within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), marking a significant advancement in Bangladesh’s international parliamentary leadership.

The Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat confirmed the development in an official release on Monday (October 5, 2026). Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad formally took over the mantle from outgoing APG Chairman, Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan Tasho Tempa Dorji, during the ongoing 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania. Representing a powerful parliamentary bloc of 37 Asia-Pacific nations, Bangladesh's elevation to the chairmanship is expected to enhance the nation's diplomatic standing and influence across global legislative assemblies. Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, currently attending the summit in Arusha as part of the high-level Bangladeshi parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker, verified the official handover ceremony.
