Without East Bengal Regiment's Armed Resistance, Bangladesh Would Still Be Pakistan: Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad

Jatiya Sangshad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has stated that if the East Bengal Regiment had not launched the initial armed resistance against Pakistani hegemony, Bangladesh would still remain a part of Pakistan.

The Speaker made these remarks while attending as the chief guest at the 'Senior Tigers Retired Members Reunion 2026', organized by the 1st East Bengal Regiment at SKS Tower in Dhaka on Saturday (October 17, 2026). Reflecting on the regiment's legacy, Speaker Hafiz Uddin noted that formed in 1948, the East Bengal Regiment earned the highest number of gallantry awards for its valor during the 1965 Indo-Pak War and the glorious 1971 Liberation War.

Recalling his own military past, the Speaker became visibly emotional as he described the trials of the battlefield, emphasizing that the 1971 war was a true people's uprising where the East Bengal Regiment—led by Major Ziaur Rahman—stood at the forefront of the armed rebellion to secure national survival. Following his speech, a documentary detailing the regiment's historic sacrifices was screened, and the Senior Tigers presented the Speaker with an honorary crest in the presence of retired military veterans, senior army officers, and guests from across the nation.
