A woman named Rabeya Begum and her associate were detained on suspicion of being Rohingya while attempting to obtain a National Identity Card (NID) using false information and forged documents in Tarakanda upazila, Mymensingh. They were detained on Thursday (September 24) afternoon from the Tarakanda Upazila Election Office.
According to the upazila election office, the woman came to the office with necessary documents to get listed as a Bangladeshi citizen. However, during the verification of her application and information, inconsistencies in her speech raised suspicions among election officials. Upon questioning, she failed to provide accurate information supporting her name and address.
Investigation revealed that the woman was trying to become a voter by creating fake documents, including a forged birth registration. Her male accomplice, who acted as an intermediary, was also detained. It is primarily suspected that the woman may be a Rohingya from Myanmar.
Tarakanda Upazila Election Officer (In-Charge) Mohammad Ashikur Rahman Sarker stated that they were handed over to the local police for attempting registration using fake names, addresses, and forged documents. Tarakanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rashed Hasan confirmed the incident, stating that the two detainees are in police custody. Efforts are underway to determine their true identities, and police have launched an investigation to see if any organized broker or forgery ring is involved behind the incident.
