Police in Rangunia, Chattogram, have arrested a former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader for his alleged involvement in the 2017 armed attack on the motorcade of the then BNP Secretary General (now President) Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The suspect, identified as Md. Sohel Hossain—former president of Rangunia Government College BCL—was apprehended on Thursday afternoon (September 24, 2026) following a police chase near the Pomra Gochhara Bazar area. According to law enforcement, officers stationed at a checkpost in Pahartali-CUET tried to intercept a motorcycle driven by Sohel, who disobeyed signals and attempted to flee before being chased down and detained.
The arrest pertains to the violent assault on June 18, 2017, in the Ichakhali area of Rangunia, where an armed mob equipped with iron rods and sharp weapons ambushed a high-level BNP delegation. The attack left Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and several other senior leaders injured. Rangunia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Johir Uddin confirmed that Sohel Hossain is a named accused in the charge sheet involving 26 Awami League and affiliate leaders, adding that legal proceedings are underway to send him to judicial custody.
