Jamaat-e-Islami Labels Government a 'Syndicate Regime' During Mass Protest Over Gas & Commodity Price Hikes

Dr. Shafiqul Islam Masud, General Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka City South, sharply criticized the government on Sunday afternoon, November 8, 2026, declaring that the current administration represents business and extortion syndicates rather than the general populace.

Speaking as the main speaker at a pre-procession demonstration organized outside the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, Dr. Masud condemned the recent price increases in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, and essential kitchen staples. He argued that whenever gas prices are raised, market syndicates artificially compound prices across everyday goods, creating severe financial strain on citizens. He further noted that extortion in industrial sectors prevents manufacturers from offering fair wages to workers and leads to massive price markups between rural farms and urban markets.

Addressing political and constitutional matters, Dr. Masud criticized recent statements by government leadership regarding constitutional amendments, warning that attempting to suppress public dissent through legislation would backfire. He called on the government to consult opposition parties and constitutional experts ahead of the parliamentary session to initiate inclusive reforms, warning that the opposition's eight-point agenda could quickly escalate into a single-point movement for regime change. Presided over by Jamaat Dhaka City South President Nurul Islam Bulbul, the rally concluded with a large street procession joined by leaders of the party's women's wing.
