Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman Commemorates Victims of 2006 'Logi-Boitha' Tragedy, Demands Reopening of Murder Cases
Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman demanding immediate judicial action against the perpetrators of the 2006 Paltan violence.

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, issued a press statement on Monday (October 26, 2026), commemorating those killed during the violent "Logi-Boitha" (boat oars and poles) attacks on October 28, 2006.

Recalling the events of October 28, 2006, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman stated that at the end of the Four-Party Alliance government's term, the Awami League-led 14-Party Alliance unleashed violence across the country to derail the scheduled national parliamentary elections. Armed cadres attacked a peaceful public rally organized by Jamaat-e-Islami at the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka, where then-Jamaat Ameer and Industry Minister Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami was chief guest. He highlighted that 14 Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists were killed nationwide and over a thousand were injured during day-long clashes in Paltan and other districts.

The Leader of the Opposition termed the October 28 massacre a pre-planned crime against humanity that initiated a dark era of political violence in Bangladesh's history. He criticized the former regime for withdrawing the murder cases filed against the perpetrators to block justice. In light of the political transition following the August 5 student-led mass uprising, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman urged the current government to immediately reopen the withdrawn cases and bring the perpetrators to justice. To mark the day, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami announced a two-day nationwide program, including a central discussion meeting in Dhaka on Tuesday (October 27) and nationwide rallies, discussion sessions, and prayers on Wednesday (October 28).
