"Where is the Country Heading?": Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman Questions Assault on IEDCR Director
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman issuing a public statement on the IEDCR incident.

Leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has sharply criticized the state of law and order, questioning "where the country is heading" following the physical assault of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Director Prof. Kazi Ahmed Zakir inside his office.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, 2026, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed grave concern over the incident, which occurred at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the IEDCR premises in Mohakhali. Citing sources, he alleged that activists belonging to the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB)—a pro-BNP physicians' organization—created a mob, breached the director's office, and physically assaulted him.

Condemning the act as a "dark chapter in the history of Bangladesh’s medical service," the Jamaat leader emphasized that if educated and specialized institutions are subjected to reckless broad-daylight mob violence, the entire country's direction comes into question. He added that the scars of recent vandalism and looting at Radda Medical Center remain fresh, making this secondary assault an audacious criminal act. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman demanded an immediate, impartial investigation and strict legal punishment for those responsible, warning that Bangladesh's fragile health administration cannot recover unless mob justice is decisively eradicated.
