German tennis star Alexander Zverev is officially guaranteed to finish the 2026 season at the pinnacle of the ATP world rankings, marking a historic milestone in his career.
The confirmation came on Monday after world number three Carlos Alcaraz suffered a surprise straight-sets defeat (7-5, 7-6) to unseeded Belgian player Zizou Bergs in the round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters. Combined with world number one Jannik Sinner being sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, Alcaraz's exit cleared Zverev's path to lock down the top spot.
The 29-year-old German, who captured his career-first French Open title in June followed by a US Open triumph in September, will officially have his year-end number-one status confirmed on November 16. Zverev expressed his elation, calling the achievement a dream come true after an incredible Grand Slam-winning season.
