West Indies cricketers Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford have been officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point each by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20 International against India in Ranchi.
Despite securing a thrilling record run chase on Friday, both players faced disciplinary action following post-match reviews by the match officiating team. Rovman Powell was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2, which pertains to the "abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings," after hitting the ball away with his bat in frustration following his sixth-over dismissal by Mayank Yadav.
Meanwhile, Sherfane Rutherford was charged under Article 2.8 for "showing dissent at an umpire's decision" after shouting aggressively at the on-field umpire in the 13th over when a delivery he expected to be called wide was ruled legitimate.
Both players admitted to their respective Level 1 offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Emirates ICC International Panel Match Referee Prakash Bhatt, ruling out the requirement for formal hearings. The charges were levied by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Rohan Pandit, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Virender Sharma. As this marked the first offence for both players within a 24-month period, one demerit point has been officially added to their disciplinary records.
