Bangladesh Bat First Against West Indies in 1st Mirpur Test; Mushfiqur Rahim Ruled Out Due to Injury

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first against the West Indies in the opening Test of the two-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The host nation was forced to make a key change to their playing XI following a late injury blow to veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim. Mushfiqur sustained a index finger injury during net practice on Tuesday when a ball from a sidearm thrower struck his hand, forcing him out of the match. Middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy has been drafted into the XI as his replacement, while Litton Das returns to the side to handle wicketkeeping duties following his recovery from injury.

Bangladesh has opted for a spin-heavy bowling attack suited to the Mirpur surface, featuring three front-line spinners—Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, and Nayeem Hasan—complemented by pace duo Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam. For the West Indies, spin all-rounder Joshua Bishop makes his Test debut. Led by captain Roston Chase, the Caribbean side has also selected a balanced unit featuring fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales, supported by spinner Jamel Warrican and all-rounder Justin Greaves.
