In a major setback to their World Test Championship (WTC) final aspirations, Bangladesh suffered a comprehensive 8-wicket defeat against West Indies on the fourth day of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Despite securing a crucial 27-run lead in the first innings—posting 272 in response to West Indies' 245—Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side collapsed dramatically in their second innings, folding for just 142 runs. Resuming the fourth morning at 79 for 6, the tail-enders fought briefly, with Nayeem Hasan scoring an unbeaten 33, but set a modest target of 170. Caribbean spinners wrecked the Bangladeshi batting lineup, led by Roston Chase who claimed 5 for 36 and Jomel Warrican who took 4 wickets. In reply, West Indies openers Brandon King and John Campbell chased down the target in just 35.1 overs, losing only 2 wickets.

The defeat snaps Bangladesh's five-match home Test winning streak (achieved against Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Pakistan) and significantly complicates their path to the WTC final, requiring them to win at least four and draw one of their remaining five matches. The second and final Test of the series is set to begin on November 5.
