Malaysia displayed aggressive, fast-paced football from the opening whistle, taking full advantage of a disorganized Bangladeshi defense. Goalkeeper Mitul Marma (Mehedi Hasan Srabon) was forced into action as early as the 4th minute to tip away a Malaysian corner kick. However, the pressure paid off in the 18th minute when forward Arif Aiman received a mid-field pass, outmaneuvered experienced defender Topu Barman inside the box, and slotted the ball past the keeper to put Malaysia ahead 1-0. In the 38th minute, a costly mispass by Topu Barman allowed Arif Aiman to pounce once again, doubling his tally and extending Malaysia's lead to 2-0 heading into the halftime break.
