Former Swiss international and Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has formally announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency, setting up a high-profile challenge against incumbent Gianni Infantino.
The 55-year-old former center-back, who won the English League Cup with Tottenham in 1999 and a Scottish treble with Celtic during the 2000–01 season, launched a sharp critique against Infantino's administration.
Vega accused the current leadership of damaging FIFA’s credibility and demoralizing the global football community through weak governance and controversial privatization moves regarding FIFA tournaments. Outlining his platform, Vega declared that his mission is to unify the global football family, rebuild public trust, and modernize the governing body for the 21st century.
Emphasizing that football belongs to fans, players, coaches, and grassroots communities rather than administrators, Vega pledged comprehensive institutional reforms. Having represented Switzerland 23 times during his playing career—including at Euro 1996—Vega enters the presidential race after years of speculation, posing a significant challenge to Infantino as he seeks a fourth term.
