Sri Lanka Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva has officially resigned from his leadership role with immediate effect, citing the need to transition team leadership to the next generation of cricketers.
In a formal letter submitted to the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Selection Committee on Thursday (October 8, 2026), the 35-year-old all-rounder stated that the mantle of Test captaincy should naturally pass to younger leaders. De Silva, who assumed the Test captaincy in early 2024 following Dimuth Karunaratne's tenure, led Sri Lanka in 18 Test matches, recording 7 victories, 8 defeats, and 3 draws. During his captaincy, Sri Lanka secured Test series victories against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. Notably, de Silva scored twin centuries in Sylhet during his second match as captain to secure a 328-run victory against Bangladesh.
Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Cricket Ashley de Silva expressed gratitude for de Silva’s leadership and confirmed that he will remain available for selection as a senior player. SLC is expected to name his successor ahead of the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.
