Bangladesh has officially sought targeted financial support from the World Bank to cushion the domestic energy sector from mounting cost pressures caused by global market volatility.

Speaking to journalists on Monday (October 12, 2026) at the opening of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Thailand, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that Bangladesh is currently incurring substantial additional expenditures in the energy domain. To absorb this fiscal strain, the government is negotiating a structured financial protection agreement with the World Bank.

The Finance Minister noted that discussions extend beyond existing fund allocations, aiming for a broader framework to address ongoing global disruptions. Expressing optimism over the multilateral lender’s positive posture, Chowdhury emphasized that these collaborative mechanisms are closely aligned with the government's economic electoral manifesto. While procedural negotiations remain underway, he reassured that Bangladesh's macroeconomic trajectory remains firmly on track.
