Dhaka Market Update: Early Winter Vegetables Offer Relief, But Fish and Meat Prices Stay Steep

Dhaka kitchen markets are witnessing a price drop in fresh produce due to the early arrival of winter vegetables, offering relief to city consumers. However, prices for fish, poultry, and beef remain high, forcing buyers to spend more on essential proteins.

A market survey across Gulshan, Kalachandpur, Uttar Badda, and Joar Sahara markets on Saturday, November 7, 2026, showed a noticeable drop in vegetable prices. Early winter crops like beans are selling for ৳70–80 per kg, green chilies at ৳80–100 per kg, and tomatoes at ৳120 per kg. Brinjals are priced at ৳80–100 per kg, pointed gourds (পটল) at ৳50 per kg, bitter gourds (করলা) at ৳70 per kg, and bottle gourds (লাউ) at ৳40–50 per piece. Retail vendors noted that prices are expected to drop further as supply improves in the coming weeks.

In contrast, protein prices remain elevated. Broiler chicken is selling at ৳175–180 per kg, Sonali chicken at ৳310–320 per kg, and beef is holding firm at ৳800–850 per kg. Retailers attributed the firm chicken prices to high rates at wholesale hubs. The fish market also remains expensive: large Ilish (above 1kg) is selling for ৳2,600–2,800 per kg, while small Ilish remains over ৳1,000 per kg. Standard cultivars like Rui sell for ৳240–300 per kg and Pabda at ৳360 per kg.
