Soaring prices of Hilsa fish in the capital's kitchen markets have put the national favorite out of reach for many low- and middle-income families.
A market survey conducted on Friday (September 25, 2026) across North Badda and Middle Badda kitchen markets revealed that Hilsa weighing 800 to 900 grams is selling at BDT 1,500 per kilogram, forcing buyers to spend between BDT 1,200 and BDT 1,350 for a single fish. Meanwhile, larger Hilsa weighing 1 kg or more is fetching BDT 2,200 per kilogram, pushing the price of a single large fish above BDT 2,000. Frustrated consumers expressed that buying a single Hilsa severely impacts their overall household budget, prompting many to return empty-handed in hopes of a price drop. Traders reported a significant slump in sales, noting that buyers frequently inquire about prices but walk away or seek smaller alternatives. Additionally, buyers showed little interest in imported Indian Hilsa, citing superior taste and quality in domestic river catches, though exorbitant prices continue to impede purchasing power.
