Vegetable prices across kitchen markets in the capital have registered a sharp increase, driven by supply disruptions caused by recent rainfall and rising transport costs.
A market survey conducted across various kitchen markets in Dhaka on Friday (September 25, 2026)—including Malibagh and Rampura—revealed that Hyacinth Beans (Shim) emerged as the most expensive item, retailing at BDT 180 to BDT 200 per kilogram. Brinjal (Aubergine) prices also spiked significantly, with round varieties selling between BDT 140 and BDT 160 per kilogram, while long varieties were priced at BDT 100 per kilogram. Green chillies were selling at BDT 200 per kilogram, carrots at BDT 140 per kilogram, and tomatoes at BDT 100 per kilogram. Most common kitchen staples—including pointed gourd, bitter gourd, yardlong beans, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, and okra— hovered around BDT 70 to BDT 100 per kilogram, leaving raw papaya as the sole affordable option at BDT 30 per kilogram.
Traders attributed the price surge to field damage from recent rains reducing market arrivals, coupled with increased freight charges following recent fuel price hikes. However, vendors expressed optimism that prices would normalize with the upcoming arrival of winter crops.
