Summit Group FSRU Shutdown for 3-Day Maintenance Triggers Severe Gas Crisis Risk Across Bangladesh

Bangladesh is bracing for an acute energy crisis as one of the country's two Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) in Maheshkhali shuts down for three days of routine maintenance, slashing national gas supply by approximately 350 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD).

Speaking on condition of anonymity to Barta24.com, a senior official from Petrobangla confirmed that the FSRU owned and operated by Summit Group submitted a formal notice to undergo routine maintenance starting November 3, 2026. Petrobangla is negotiating to shift the schedule by one day—starting November 4—to align the shutdown with the weekend (Wednesday through Friday) to minimize industrial disruption.

The temporary shutdown comes at a time when Bangladesh is already struggling with depleted domestic reserves. While domestic fields once yielded 2,800 MMCFD, production dropped to 1,576 MMCFD as of October 30, 2026, supplemented by 982 MMCFD in imported LNG. With Summit’s terminal offline, the remaining terminal operated by US-based Excelerate Energy can deliver a maximum of 600 MMCFD. Consequently, total national supply will plummet below 2,100 MMCFD, sharply widening the deficit against actual consumer demand of 4,000 MMCFD (and sanctioned demand of 5,500 MMCFD). Petrobangla plans to distribute the supply cut proportionally across industrial, power, and domestic sectors over the 72-hour maintenance window.
