Law enforcement agencies detained 15 fishermen in separate drives for illegally catching hilsa in the Padma River in Jajira, Shariatpur, defying the government-imposed ban. During the operations on Monday (October 12, 2026), authorities also seized three engine-driven boats, about 7,000 meters of fishing nets, and approximately 50,000 meters of banned current nets.

According to Majhirghat Naval Police, regular drives are being conducted across various areas of the Padma River to enforce the government's seasonal ban aimed at preserving mother hilsa during its peak breeding season. Out of the 15 arrested, regular cases have been filed against 10 fishermen at Padma Bridge South Police Station and against 3 at Jajira Police Station. In a separate joint operation conducted by the naval police, upazila fisheries office, and the Assistant Commissioner (Land), two other fishermen were detained and subsequently sentenced to 15 days of simple imprisonment each by a mobile court led by Jajira Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mehedi Hasan. The seized current nets were later destroyed by burning.

The government has enforced a 22-day nationwide ban from October 8 to October 29 on catching, transporting, storing, marketing, and selling hilsa to ensure the safe spawning of mother hilsa and boost future production.
