The death toll from the catastrophic fire at the Tuptup Resort and Restaurant in Inani, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar has risen to 10, with several others injured, Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities confirmed.

The blaze broke out around 7:30 AM on Saturday morning (October 17, 2026) at the wooden beachfront eco-resort located in the Patuartek beach area adjacent to Marine Drive. Receiving the alarm at 7:25 AM, two firefighting units from the Ukhiya Fire Station rushed to the spot, reaching by 8:00 AM to initiate fire suppression and search-and-rescue operations. Ten bodies have been recovered from the charred remains of the wooden structure.

Addressing a press conference in Dhaka, Fire Service Director General Brigadier General Sultanul Afreen Junaid disclosed that the wooden resort was operating completely without authorization or a valid fire safety license. He revealed that Fire Service inspectors had formally issued a hazard warning notice in June declaring the resort unsafe, but the management continued illegal commercial operations. Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atiqur Rahman stated that law enforcement has launched a full forensic investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and hold responsible parties accountable.
