Farmers across the Barind region, particularly in areas like Godagari, are currently busy cultivating early winter vegetables—such as cauliflower, cabbage, tomatoes, beans, and gourds—hoping to secure high market returns at the start of the season. Inspired by success stories like civil engineering graduate-turned-farmer Ali Asgar and local grower Mohammad Amin, cultivators are investing in their lands with expectations of substantial profits, supported by adequate fertilizer availability and field-level advice from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
Despite challenges such as excessive rainfall causing seedling rot and occasional insect attacks, agriculture officials, including Godagari Upazila Agriculture Officer Mariam Ahmed, note that early vegetables are already being cultivated on around 1,841 hectares in the upazila. Across the entire Barind region, the winter vegetable cultivation target has been set at approximately 15,000 hectares, with cultivation already completed on over 3,000 hectares as farmers work to turn favorable conditions and proper agricultural support into better incomes.
