A bloody clash between two rival groups over land possession in the remote char area of Chilmari, Kurigram, has left a 65-year-old man dead, several others injured, and a house set on fire. The incident occurred on Thursday morning (October 1) in the Nayab Alir Bazar area under Goalarchhar in Nayarhat Union. The deceased was identified as Hurmuj Ali (65), a resident of the area.
According to local sources, a long-standing dispute and legal battle over land had been ongoing between groups led by local union member Selim and Tota Mia. Although a recent court verdict went in favor of Selim's group, tension escalated when his supporters announced plans to take possession of the land. When Selim’s group went to occupy the land on Thursday morning, Tota Mia’s group allegedly launched an attack using a tractor and indigenous weapons, resulting in Hurmuj Ali's death on the spot and serious injuries to several others.
Village police officer Gobinda confirmed the death and arson incident from the scene. Dhushmara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M R Sayeed stated that a police team was dispatched to the area upon receiving information to investigate and handle the situation.
