The Ishwardi Upazila Administration fined a fish vendor Tk 2,000 for selling jelly-injected shrimp at the Ishwardi municipality fish market in Pabna. Authorities also seized 10 kg of jelly-tainted shrimp, which were later destroyed and buried in public view.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asaduzzaman Sarkar conducted the drive around 11:00 AM on Thursday (October 8). Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Shammi Shirin, along with fisheries department officials and local police officers, was present during the operation.
According to sources, the drive was carried out following allegations that vendors were injecting harmful jelly into shrimp to artificially increase their weight. During the inspection, authorities found 10 kg of jelly-injected shrimp at a stall and confiscated the stock. Proven guilty of selling contaminated fish, the vendor was fined Tk 2,000 under the Fish and Fish Products (Inspection and Quality Control) Act, 2020.
As part of the ongoing mother hilsa protection campaign, inspections were also carried out across various fish stalls in the market; however, no hilsa fish were found. Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asaduzzaman Sarkar stated that regular drives are being conducted to protect mother hilsa and ensure safe, quality food for consumers, confirming that such monitoring operations will continue.
