Garment workers staged aggressive protests on the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in the Ashulia industrial zone on Sunday (November 1), blocking traffic by burning fires and placing electric poles on the road. Their core demands include a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000 and the immediate cessation of blacklisting. The blockade brought vehicular movement on the busy Nabinagar-Chandra highway to a complete standstill, prompting law enforcement agencies to maintain strict vigilance to control the situation.
According to observations across various areas including Palli Bidyut, Unic, Jamgora, Narsinghapur, Jirani Bazar, and Baipail on Sunday morning, factory operations initially proceeded as usual. Police personnel were seen on duty at various locations and in front of factories to maintain law and order. However, after 10:00 AM, several garment factories across multiple areas declared holidays, causing workers to spill onto the streets. Subsequently, workers from factories in Narsinghapur, Jirani Bazar, Kabirpur, Baraipara, and Sreepur took to the roads, blocking both the Nabinagar-Chandra highway and the Baipail-Abdullahpur road. Law enforcement later intervened and dispersed the protesters, eventually restoring normalcy to the highway.

In the face of ongoing unrest, several factories posted closure notices on their main gates, while general holidays were declared in approximately fifty factories.
Protesting workers stated that amid soaring commodity prices, their current wages are utterly insufficient to support their families. Furthermore, they alleged systemic discrimination, noting that hiring practices heavily favor female workers, leaving male workers marginalized. Consequently, these grievances have fueled the ongoing agitations.
Their primary and most pressing demand is the establishment of a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. Workers asserted that they will not halt their protests until this demand is met.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shoaib Ahmed of Industrial Police-1 stated that the situation remained normal in the morning, though minor disruptions occurred around 10:30 AM. A factory named "Knit Asia" had declared a closure, prompting its workers to gather in front of "Sharmin Garments." He noted that the workers were generally peaceful, and the police played a responsible role by reasoning with them, after which Sharmin Group also declared a closure.
He further mentioned that traffic movement on the roads remained mostly normal. However, some agitated workers threw bricks at "Ananta Garments," but police arrived promptly to discuss their demands and successfully persuaded the workers to disperse. Currently, the situation is stable, traffic movement is normal, and adequate police personnel have been deployed at various strategic points, the industrial police official added.
