Md. Mohitul Islam, General Manager (GM) of the Magura Rural Electricity Association, has been temporarily suspended following the generation of an abnormal electricity bill amounting to Tk 506,83,11,593 against a usage of only 235 units in Magura. The punitive action was taken by the Rural Electrification Board on Wednesday (September 30) under the urgent directive of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud.

After the incident drew widespread attention in the media and social platforms, the Minister personally called the affected consumer—Aleya Khatun, wife of retired teacher Shahidul Islam from Kechuadubi village under Magura Sadar Upazila—to express regret and inform her that the bill had already been corrected. Explaining the error, Md. Rezaul Karim, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the Arpara Zonal Office, stated that the anomaly occurred due to a clerical mistake during a meter replacement, where meter seal digits were mistakenly entered into the demand charge field.
