Savar-Ashulia Labor Unrest: 264 Garment Factories Declare Holiday Following Clashes Over Minimum Wage Demands

At least 264 readymade garment (RMG) factories across the industrial hubs of Savar and Ashulia were forced to declare a general holiday on Monday afternoon, November 2, 2026, following violent clashes between garment workers and law enforcement. The confirmation was issued by Industrial Police-1 Superintendent of Police (SP) Mominul Islam Bhuiyan.

For the third consecutive day, workers took to the streets advocating a 3-point charter of demands: raising the minimum monthly wage to ৳30,000, halting worker retrenchments, and canceling worker blacklists. Protesters blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway at Baraipara in the morning before being cleared by Ashulia Police. Meanwhile, workers from New Age Garments launched a work stoppage at Nishchintapur and joined crowds in front of Ananta Garments on the Bypaile-Abdullahpur road, prompting major units like Neat Asia, Al-Muslim, Trouser Line, and Ananta to declare an immediate holiday.

Escalating tension led to brickbatting between workers and police outside several units, including Picard Bangladesh, Artistic Design, Denitex, Anlima Textile, and GQ Industries. Police deployed tear gas shells to disperse the crowd after agitated workers set fire to a covered van in the Narsinghapur area. Industrial Police confirmed that two workers were detained during the altercations, and heavy police reinforcements have been stationed across the belt to prevent further violence.
