Schoolboy Meets Tragic Death After Falling into Slabless Drain in Nandail
The uncovered and weed-overgrown drain in Nandail, Mymensingh, where a schoolboy fell to his death due to missing concrete slabs.

A schoolboy has tragically died after falling into an uncovered municipal drain left without concrete slabs for a long time in the Nandail municipal area of Mymensingh. The deceased was identified as Pranta Mia, the only son of Robi Mia from the Charanipara neighborhood and a student at the local Chandipasha Government High School.

According to local and family sources, Pranta suddenly fell into the slabless, deep drain in front of his home last Thursday (September 17). Family members and neighbors rescued him and provided initial medical care. When his physical condition deteriorated on Saturday morning (September 19), he was rushed to the Nandail Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Local residents alleged that although the drain was constructed at a cost of millions of takas, the contracting firm abandoned the project without installing any slabs or covers. Left unprotected for months, the drain became overgrown with weeds and creepers, turning it into a death trap for pedestrians. Several passersby had previously been severely injured after falling into the same drain.

Overwhelmed with grief after losing his only child, the victim's father, Robi Mia, wept and said, "This unprotected drain took my son's life. If concrete slabs had been installed, my child would still be alive today."

News of Pranta's death sparked intense anger across the area. Enraged residents demanded strict punishment for the negligent contractor and concerned authorities, along with the immediate installation of slabs on all open drains throughout the town.

Commenting on the incident, municipal representatives acknowledged that the accident occurred due to negligence by the contracting firm. Terming the event deeply tragic, authorities assured that, under official directives, open drains across the municipality would be covered with slabs immediately to ensure public safety.
