A wave of condemnation and criticism has erupted in Jhenaidah after a garland of shoes was found hung on the sculpture of Bir Shreshtha Hamidur Rahman, the country's highest gallantry award recipient for his supreme sacrifice in the 1971 Liberation War. Local residents spotted the desecration at the Hamidur Chattar area adjacent to the Jhenaidah Central Bus Terminal on Tuesday morning (October 6, 2026), though the perpetrators' identities and motives remain unknown.

Locals strongly condemned the humiliating act and demanded immediate identification and legal action against those responsible. This incident follows an earlier controversy wherein the district administration had previously attempted to demolish the sculpture citing road traffic reasons, only to halt the move following fierce resistance and protests from locals, freedom fighters, journalists, intellectuals, student bodies, and political figures, after which the monument was newly reconstructed before this latest act of vandalism occurred.
