A special drive was conducted across various areas of Sadar and Nakla upazilas in Sherpur on Wednesday to curb bird poaching, organized jointly by the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department of Sherpur, Sherpur Bird Club, and the environmental organization Shine.
The nearly six-hour operation began at dawn on Wednesday, during which 8 trapping devices (hala) and 12 egrets were recovered. The rescued egrets were subsequently released back into nature, while leaflets and stickers were distributed among locals to raise awareness about avian protection. In Adampur village of Nakla's Gonpaddi union, bird poacher Md. Abdur Razzaq (45)—son of the late Suruj Ali—was detained along with three egrets and poaching gear. A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sadia Afrin Anny sentenced him to seven days of simple imprisonment and a fine of fifty taka under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act.
Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Officer Suman Sarkar, Wildlife Ranger Md. Abdullah Al Amin, and Sherpur Bird Club Founder President and Shine Executive Director Md. Mogniur Rahman Moni were present during the drive. Wildlife Officer Suman Sarkar confirmed that the convict has been sent to jail and stated that such regular operations will continue.
