DHAKA — From next academic year, all public universities will admit students through a single unified entrance test, ending the gruelling circuit of separate exams that drained families of money and students of sleep.

Under the new system, candidates will sit one exam and apply with one merit score across universities, with subject choices allocated by preference and rank.

Vice-chancellors called it the biggest admissions reform in decades; coaching centres called it an existential threat.
