According to official updates from CBS and MTV, the newly established honor recognizes music artists whose directorial work behind the camera has expanded visual storytelling within the music industry. Receiving this non-competitive honor will officially bring Swift’s total VMA tally to 31 Moon Persons, allowing her to surpass Beyoncé—who currently holds 30 awards across her career—as the single most-awarded individual in VMA history.
Additionally, Swift has earned nine competitive nominations at this year's ceremony, including 'Video of the Year' for her track "The Fate of Ophelia" and 'Best Direction' for "Opalite". A victory in the 'Video of the Year' category would extend her existing record to six total wins in the flagship category.
