
COX'S BAZAR — At dawn the salt pans shine like broken mirrors, and Rahima Begum reads the sky the way her grandmother taught her. The sea is closer than it was. So is she to losing everything.
Farmers here have raised pan embankments, switched to quick-maturing salt cycles, and diversified into crab fattening for the months the sea wins.
'The sea takes, the sea gives,' Rahima says, raking crystals under a hard white sun. 'We just have to be faster than it.'
